On the Couch with Robert Bell of  Kool and the Gang

To start at the beginning, how did you come up with the Kool...in your name?Kool: Well "Kool" was a nickname of mine, and with everything happening in my neighbourhood at the time, I came up with "Kool and the Gang"

How did your passion for music come about?
Kool: Music was always around the house. We use to listen to Motown music and was inspired by them among many other artists.

Was it difficult choosing new artists to join the band once the older ones had passed on?
Kool: There were alot of changes through the years. There was so much talent out there and so it just happened that the right people were recruited or came to us, and the rest as they say is history.


You guys are known for your for fresh dance moves...can your"ll still rock the dance floor, and how often do  you practice these moves?
Kool: Hey, we are not old guys. Do we look old? We can certainly rock the floor as we will show your'l at the concert. We usually rehearse before every show and since we each have our own rhythm we kind of blend it all together.


What is your take on todays music, especially rap that has taken over the airwaves?
Kool: I think rap music is great. I love Hip Hop also, although I think they can do without the profanities!

Do you know who Justin Bieber is? What do you think of "child singers"
Kool: O course we know who he is. My daughter made me take her to a concert of his last month and he was phenomenal. These stars are made by the internet, and there are some really talented children out there. 

Name a few of your favourite artists of today, male and female?
Kool: Oh I like Jay-Z, Chris Brown, Neyo among others. My female favourites are Beyonce, Jill Scott and Rihanna. 

What can audiences expect from the concert?
Kool: Well we are very excited to be back in South Africa after 14 years and are looking forward to the concert. The last time we were here, the people showed us alot of love and now we are back!. It's a new gang, but we are back!
It will be a real BANG!
